U = You

Take some time out for a little personal reflection. What do you see? And perhaps more importantly, what do others see?

Self-awareness does not come naturally to everyone. But it’s something you’ll find running through most great leaders. It’s essential if you want to understand – and play to – your strengths. It’s also crucial if you want others to understand you better, ergo avoid conflict, misunderstandings and mistrust.

The Johari Window is a useful framework for increasing self-awareness, helping to draw out the different aspects of self-knowledge and consciousness that impact our daily lives. Key to its success is its emphasis on the importance of pertinent feedback from others. Analyse it, understand it and act on it – you may find you’re not exactly who you think you are…
