O is of ‘Oh-no’s

That feeling of dread and impending doom when you realise you’ve made a complete howler at work is quite like nothing else. Whether it’s offending the boss at the Christmas party, sending an email to the wrong recipient or letting slip something you shouldn’t have, the most important thing is to limit the damage – and get on with business.

Don’t ignore the situation in the hope it will go away. It won’t. Own up to your mistake before it has time to snowball. Speak to whomever you need to in person. They’ll appreciate your honest (and bravery) and are much more likely to forgive you sooner rather than later.

If you’ve really screwed up, there’s no better way to demonstrate your apology than putting in extra effort and being the best you can. Prove yourself to be indispensable and any indiscretions will (with any luck) soon be forgotten…
