Mentoring – The Secret Weapon Of The Successful

If you’re not using mentoring and making it deliver for you, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s as simple as that. All around you people are developing through being mentored or offering mentoring themselves, and organisations are gaining a competitive advantage by reaping the benefits of mentoring schemes. So if you’re reading this feeling like you are on the back foot, how can you get onto the front foot with mentoring…fast?

If you are someone who wants to progress at work, whatever “progress” means for you, a well-chosen mentor can help guide your thinking and steer you on the path to success. Perhaps you are faced with a daunting new project – find a mentor who has delivered one similar in the past and can mentor you through the maze. Maybe you are aiming for a promotion, cross-department move or step up to senior level – identify someone who has successfully navigated that same journey before to mentor you through the professional challenges and opportunities on the way. Don’t settle for the “easy ask”; be brave and ask your ideal mentor to work with you. Most potential mentors are flattered to be asked and know that they too stand to gain from offering mentoring.

Perhaps this is you? Well into your career with skills, experiences and knowledge to offer you’re now looking to grow your inter-personal capabilities. Offering mentoring isn’t a completely selfless gesture. Mentoring is a hands-on way of growing your coaching skills, emotional intelligence and leadership competencies, while also making a positive difference to someone else.

Maybe you are a decision-maker in an organisation that has not yet capitalised on mentoring? Savvy organisations, particularly those that believe they have some of the best industry talent within their walls, identify mentoring as a powerful tool that enables them to disseminate best-practice knowledge and replicate role model behaviours cost-effectively and in a way that builds lasting relationships across the business.

So now you know the mentoring secret weapon too, start using it to quickly close that gap. Get a mentor, get mentoring or get a mentoring scheme set up. Whether you become a mentee, mentor or mentor scheme innovator, once you’ve discovered the power of mentoring you’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.
